Erythropoiesis
Summary of video:
Erythropoiesis is the process by which red blood cells are produced.
The process begins when a low oxygen level is detected in the blood. This low oxygen level stimulates the kidney to secrete erythropoietin, a hormone, which stimulates stem cell production of red blood cells in red bone marrow.
Erythropoiesis occurs and red blood cell production increases. As a result, oxygen levels in the blood increase, signaling erythropoietin levels to diminish. Red blood cell production slows until a condition or factor lowers blood oxygen level and the process begins again.
